All of our local authorities are being driven down the Transformation / Personalisation route by Government policy arising from Putting People First. How is this reflected among our providers and for us, more importantly, what are the workforce development implications? Comments and ideas welcome

Interesting new social enterprise called Self Direct www.selfdirect.org offers case studies, resources and training on issues of choice, direct payments and transforming social care.

There is a really interesting article in the Social care supplement in todays Guardian, entitled "Is personalisation a threat to the quality of care services?" , the yes side being written by the Association for Real Changes, and arguments against written by a Team Manager fo Social Services.

It raises some really interesting issues....

Responding to David's comment, the 'no' response was written by Gavin who is also a service user and does presentations on how Individual Budgets have changed his life. I believe he is booked for an event in MK. He is also featured in adverts for the MS Society on escalators at various tube stations!

Hi all

There is a summary of the evaluation of the Personal Budgets Pilot in the workforce development section of the site (click on Training & Funding, then Bucks then Workforce Development Group and then the Resources sub section).  There were 13 pilot sites and it looks like a large body of work, of great relevance to the changes proposed in the Transformation agenda.  The main report, which is huge is downloadable from the Dept of Health site.

Hi me again

Skills for Care have released a framework for service transformation in Adult Social Care, to help "meet the challenges of the personalisation agenda".  They are also available in the Workforce Development Section of the site.  More resources will follow later this year and early 2009.

Slough Borough Council's Adult Social Care teams are running an all day event on 10.11.08 entitled "Transformation of Adult Social Care".

Slough have suggested that this event should be mandatory for all managers in the private, voluntary and independent sector. I am going and understand there are plenty of places still available.

Contact Alex Dean on 01753875766 or alex.dean@slough.gov.uk if you are interested.

A few thoughts to add on the resources side, as i am taking an initial look at the feasibility of an E-learning resource for self directed learning:

  •  The Ibsen report is a good overview of the rationale for, and some of the initial case studies; click here to view Dont worry, its the summary report, rather than the full one!
  • I have also just viewed some of the case studies on the Department of Health "Living your life, your way" DVD, which are very good; mostly service users, but also some Carers and Social Workers

Any thoughts about what an E-learning package may cover, would be appreciated

Cheers

Hi David

Thanks for this- have looked at some on the SCIE website with case studies from various service users(Florence's story, Elsie's story etc) - don't know if these are the same as the ones you have seen?

Hi All

Article in Community Care on personalisation- "CSCI identifies block in personalisation"

Thanks Caroline

There is also a rather biting piece by Peter Beresford (who you can always rely on to say the 'un sayable') on the jargon that is accompaning Self Directed Support - it makes for interesting reading and we must try on the Log on to Care site not to lapse into it!

Best, Sally

Hi Sally- yes interesting and the comment added last night is food for thought- I like Peter's description of personalisation as person-centred support (or even "planning" which is buzzing about at the moment!)

Personalisation - Making Transformation a reality - conference on 12th May in London - more info at www.healthcare-events.co.uk .  The blurb says that it is a practical day with case studies in commissioning, supporting self assessment, allocation of individual budgets and developing a supported approach to positive risk taking.
